Mother Nature has blessed Halong Bay not only with magnificent scenery, geological creatures, but precious natural products. One of them are the pearls. Though “pearl harvesting’’ is a kind of local long-time tradition, the tours to the pearl farms have just put into practice four years ago and become a special experience whilst enjoying Halong cruising trips. The pearl farm is located in an isolated area named “Tung Sau”, surrounded by rugged limestone islands. The pearl oysters are fed in the neighborhood, and a handicraft system has launched hereby, based on the Vietnamese traditional experience and Japanese new technology.
Whilst visiting the farm, travelers can witness the whole process of making a valuable pearl jewelry, from the first step of growing to the complete harvesting. Most of visitors will be amazed by the magical process to create such beautiful jewelry from skillful hands of artisans and also their extreme patience. The locals in Halong possess many secrets and know-hows in growing the pearl oysters to have big and round pearls, but it does take time, and in some months of a year, bad weather causes lost. Visitors can even observe the artisans working with their pearls after harvested from the water. They use sophisticated technique with specialized tools to create a perfect pearl. All are handmade in very intricate level.
When watching the complete pearls in the same size, we cannot recognize the raw pearls as they have been in the oysters anymore. None of the artisans complain about the lost due to weather, they just love to share with the visitors about the magic Halong can provide for them.
